For those whose needs cannot be met by nursing facilities, home care, or hospice care—all of which are discussed in detail in the sections on the left of this page—there are a number of additional care options. These services and facilities may make it possible to remain at home or to live in a home-like environment while getting needed care.
Here is an explanation of alternative living arrangements, adult care services, and other social services available in California: - Congregate Living Health Facilities provide 24-hour skilled nursing and care in a home-like setting.
- Residential Care Facilities, also known as community care, assisted living, board and care, or independent living, serve those who are able to live independently, but who may require help with personal or medical care.
- Continuing Care Retirement Communities offer a range of housing and health care services to those who can live independently, as well as those who need full-time nursing care.
- Adult Day Health Care offers health care and support during the day to older adults with multiple, chronic conditions in a safe, comfortable setting.
- Adult Day Care provides daytime supervision and a variety of social and support services to people 18 and older with physical or emotional disabilities.
- Additional Care Programs offered by state and county governments give elderly and disabled people a wide array of help—from medical services, to social visits, to nutritional counseling and meal preparation.
